Managing Storage for Electronic Medical Imagery
Once you have decided you are going to invest in brand new software for Electronic Medical Records and Electronic Medical Imagery, you will have a long path ahead of you. This is not to say that it is the wrong decision because it definitely isn’t. Still, there are many things to consider. The decision just doesn’t end with you saying that you want to purchase Electronic Medical Imagery software.
Instead, consider the fact that you will need to think of the storage for your medical images as well. In the old days, you would probably archive them and have them with all the patient’s details and documents. However, with Electronic Medical Imagery, everything would of course be done electronically. Would your system have the capability to capture, record and store all Electronic Medical Imagery? What would the time frame be for each image to be saved in your records?
When you are considering managing storage for electronic medical imagery, perhaps it is prudent to ask the same questions to your software provider. You will need to think about the whole process from end-to-end. Many hospitals and medical institutions now find themselves in the position of not having enough storage space for all their electronic medical images.
In the end, most of the images end up thrashed or lost because they do not have the capacity to save or store them properly. Nine out of ten times that would not pose a problem. However, what happens if you need to retrieve an image after some time? What would you then tell the patient or his family that you no longer have the images with you? Yes, Electronic Medical Imagery does come with its set of complications. While it is a boon to have, thinking of the storage space required for all the images might be a turn off for others.
