Maintaining Vocal Health for Singers
When your voice is your art and your career, it could not be more important to protect and ensure it is healthy as it can be. Contracting a throat virus or practicing bad singing habits can cause voice stain and severely damage your vocal chords and needless to add, hinder your career. There are many voice care tips that all singers should try to follow to ensure a long and prosperous life as a working singer.
Always Warm-up
As most professional singers will know, it is absolutely vital that you practise a vocal warm-up prior to a performance or long session of singing. By doing so you gently ease your diaphragm and vocal chords to full capacity in order to fully hold the sound required whilst singing.
Acid Reflux
Sore throat singing can be caused due to harmful acids damaging vocal tissue if you are suffering from acid reflux. It is imperative that this is treated immediately and catch it before it worsens. Such damage to your vocal chords leaves it open to viral infection and can create a long-term problem that is more difficult to fix. Drinking plenty of fluids and taking antacids are a great way to catch the problem before it escalates.
Correct Singing Posture
Should you find you begin to suffer a sore throat after singing, it may be that you are not maintaining correct posture for singing. Facial muscles and expression must always remain relaxed and neutral similarly to your shoulders and arms. Keeping your back upright and your arms by your sides positions your diaphragm in a more open and capable situation to support your voice.
Following these simple tips will ensure you are always in tip-top shape to perform at the best of your ability.
